Who He Is

A Portrait of the Artist

Krzysztof Aleksander Janczak is a Polish composer for film, television and games, as comfortable writing for a full orchestra as building a score entirely from electronics. He brings a musicologist's sense of history to the writing and takes great care with the mix, often in Dolby Surround and Atmos.

  • Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Smecky Studios and the Rudolfinum, Prague
  • Concert works performed by the London Symphony Orchestra
  • 80+ film scores; sonic identities for Disney Channel, NBC Universal and ARD
  • Czech Lion nomination · Grand Prix, Marseille · Silver Cross of Merit, President of Poland
  • Member of the European Film Academy

He studied musicology at the University of Warsaw, then composition and orchestration in Paris, at the École Normale de Musique with Michel Merlet, a pupil of Messiaen and Stravinsky. He later studied at the Maurice Ravel Conservatory.

Alongside his screen work, his concert music has been performed in Paris, London, Prague, Sydney and Carnegie Hall in New York. He also sits on the board of the Polish Filmmakers Association's Film Music Composers Circle.

The Composer’s Quotes

Krzysztof A. Janczak

A film is never waiting to be decorated with music — it is waiting to be heard.
I approach each score by listening for what’s already there: the rhythm, the silence, and the emotional current of the story — then bringing it into sound.”

Krzysztof A. Janczak

I’m obsessed with discovering a film’s sonic world — a language shaped by instinct, experimentation, and unexpected combinations.
When seemingly incompatible elements begin to resonate, something ignites: a clear, physical sense that the film has revealed something rare.”

Krzysztof A. Janczak

Sometimes it’s harder to write a bad piece than a good one. Especially in film — because sometimes, a bad piece is exactly what the scene needs.
At the heart of scoring is finding the melody, chord, rhythm, or texture the film secretly needs — even when it’s beautifully wrong.”
